Contact lens exams and contacts for patients requiring many kinds of vision solutions are available at Neal Braff O.D. We’re your central New Jersey vision center conveniently located inside the Wal-Mart at 2825 Route 18 South, Old Bridge, NJ 08857.
We have contact lenses for you whether the need is for mild adjustment of near/far vision or more complicated correction, such as for astigmatism or the near-vision blurring of presbyopia that often accompanies middle age. We are proud to offer bifocal and multifocal lenses.
Contact Exams
If you are coming in for an annual eye exam and want to be fitted for contact lenses, please let us know when you’re setting your appointment so we can accommodate both needs. Contact lens examinations require specific tests that aren’t part of standard eye exams.
It’s economical to get your basic eye exam and contact lens exam done at the same appointment and by the same doctor at the same time so there is no unnecessary replication of tests and charges.
During your contact lens exam we will ask you questions concerning your lifestyle choices, such as whether you want lenses you can wear overnight or a type of lens that can be disposed of daily or after a longer time. You also have the option of changing your eye color by wearing tinted lenses. Your answers to these questions help us pinpoint the best lens for you.
We will also take several measurements of your eye including the curvature (topography) of your cornea so the contact lenses fit correctly. For example, if you need hard-to-fit contacts for astigmatism — an irregularity in the shape of your cornea — you may need the toric variety.
Other measurements taken during a contact exam concern the size of your pupils (the dark center of your eyes) and irises (the surrounding colored area), so contacts are sized properly to match these. Another test evaluates how well your eyes tear. This helps in determining whether you need medical eye drops for dry eye.
Daily Wear Lenses
When talking about “daily wear” contact lenses, most people are referring to the soft types that can be disposed at the end of the day. Even toric lenses for astigmatism are now available as daily disposables.
Disposables minimize problems such as allergic buildup of proteins on the eye, which cause irritation. They eliminate the need for cleaning solutions at the end of the day and for having to remember when to replace contacts whether on a weekly, monthly, or annual basis.
Bifocal and Multifocal Solutions
As the eyes age, they often change. In mid-life, bifocal or progressive multifocal eyeglasses are often necessary if you find that you can no longer read without holding a book at arm’s length. Yet you aren’t limited to eyeglasses. Soft-lens contacts and hard gas-permeable types are available for bifocal and multifocal vision correction. Some are even available as disposables.
